Medusa, Goddess of Darkness and Queen of the Underworld
|First Appearance||Kid Icarus (1986)|
|Most Recent Appearance||Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012)|
Medusa is the main antagonist in the Kid Icarus game series. She first appeared in Kid Icarus on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and her most recent appearance is in Kid Icarus: Uprising on the Nintendo 3DS, where she is revived by her Underworld Army.
Medusa is the Goddess of Darkness and the resident ruler of the Underworld, where she plots against her counterpart, the Goddess of Light and ruler of all of Angel Land, Palutena. She has twice attempted to overthrow Palutena and her Centurian army, but has been thwarted by Pit both times. Whether to her knowledge or not however, she is merely being used as a pawn by the God of the Underworld, Hades, to distract everyone from him. When Thanatos is asked how Medusa outranks him when he is the God of Death and the Underworld is the world of the dead, he avoids the question to protect Hades' role from being discovered. By the time of Chapter 25: The War's End she has been revived again, and appears to help Pit, vowing that she won't play Hades' puppet anymore. Her attempt to defeat him fails and she is destroyed once again, with her fate henceforth unknown.
 Kid Icarus
Before the games events, Medusa is turned into an ugly, snake-haired monster by Palutena, as vengeance for her attacking of the humans, portrayed slightly in the anime, Medusa's Revenge. She then bands together enough of the Underworld Forces to mount a huge attack. However, Hades merely let Medusa 'borrow' his forces, as a distraction for everyone else. Medusa turns all of the Centurians to stone and imprisons Pit deep within the Underworld, before imprisoning Palutena within her Palace and giving the Three Sacred Treasures to her strongest minions; Twinbellows, Hewdraw and Pandora.
Unfortunately for Medusa however, Palutena sends a magical bow to Pit, who escapes, battles her forces, retrieves the Three Sacred Treasures, and confronts Medusa in Palutena's Palace. There he defeats her after a fierce battle, with Thanatos, in his Tanatos snake form, jumping out of her hair to attack him. Medusa is assumed to have died, but Hades took a ton of souls and gave it her memories, essentially ressurecting her.
 Kid Icarus: Uprising
In this game, Medusa reveals herself 25 years after the events of the last game to have been resurrected, and unleashes the Underworld Army. Using her commanders; Twinbellows, Hewdraw, Pandora and Thanatos and her army, she works to take souls and destroy Skyworld and the human world.
When Pit defeats her at the end of Chapter 9: Medusa's Final Battle, it is revealed that she is not the true Medusa at all, and just a large bunch of spirits disguised as her with her memories. The true leader of the Underworld Army is then revealed to be Hades, the God of the Underworld. He is revealed to be behind the events of the game and acts as the main antagonist from there on in. During his final battle against Pit, Medusa shows up, saving his life, and attacks Hades, revived again and refusing to be his 'puppet'. Whilst she successfully damages Hades, he retaliates and destroys her.
